Australia to Introduce “Green Card” Lottery-Style for Pacific and Timor-Leste Residents

The Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs announced recently, starting from July 2023, Australia will implement a new Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV), which will allow Pacific and Timor-Leste passport holders to apply for up to 3,000 visas each year. The visa is inspired by the green card US Diversity Visa Lottery and a New Zealand model for Pacific workers.

Applicants must be aged between 18 and 45 years, have a formal job offer in Australia, and meet English language, character, and health requirements. Registrations for the visa will be stacked with applicants already in Australia and holding Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403).

Interested parties will need to submit their interest in a ballot lodged online with the Department of Home Affairs. A computer program will select ballots randomly for pre-application process. However, a ballot can also be conducted without the use of a computer program.
